FREE Counseling for College Students

1. The Counseling Process:

  • Expressing Feelings: Counseling provides a space where you can talk openly about your emotions. Many people find it helpful to have someone listen empathetically to their experiences without judgment. This can help you better understand your feelings and why you might be experiencing them.
  • Examining Thoughts and Beliefs: A counselor can help you reflect on your thoughts, especially when they may be causing stress or anxiety. Sometimes, negative thought patterns or limiting beliefs can hold us back, and counseling can assist in recognizing and changing these.
  • Reflecting on Behavior: Understanding your actions, reactions, and habits is key to personal growth. Through reflection, you can identify patterns in behavior, such as avoiding challenges or responding to situations in ways that don't serve you. Counseling can help you develop healthier, more effective ways of handling life’s challenges.
  • Working Toward Change: Once you have a better understanding of your emotions, thoughts, and behaviors, a counselor can help you set goals and work on strategies to make meaningful changes in your life. This could be improving relationships, building confidence, or developing coping strategies for stress.

2. Benefits of Counseling:

  • Improved Mental Health: Regular counseling can help you better manage stress, anxiety, depression, or any other emotional struggles you might face during your academic life.
  • Better Self-Awareness: By exploring your thoughts and feelings, you can gain clarity about who you are and what you want from life. This self-awareness often leads to a stronger sense of identity and personal growth.
  • Enhanced Problem-Solving Skills: Working with a counselor helps you develop problem-solving skills to approach issues in healthier, more constructive ways.
  • Coping Mechanisms: Counselors can teach you effective coping strategies for managing stress, time management, academic pressures, relationship issues, or even adjusting to new life changes.

3. What to Expect in a Counseling Session:

  • Comfortable Environment: Counseling takes place in a private, confidential, and non-judgmental environment, ensuring that you can be open without fear of criticism.
  • Short-Term Therapy: Many university counseling services, including LIFT, offer short-term counseling. This usually means you’ll attend sessions bi-weekly or on a scheduled basis, depending on your needs. These sessions typically focus on addressing specific issues you're currently facing, though they can also be longer-term if necessary.
  • Some therapists are registered interns- trained professionals working toward licensure. A licensed mental health provider is available to support them and ensure you're well cared for.
  • Collaboration: Counseling is a collaborative process. Your counselor isn’t there to tell you what to do, but rather to guide you in discovering your own solutions. It’s a partnership to help you achieve the well-being you desire.

4. Eligibility and Access:

  • Eligibility: If you're registered for classes in the current semester, you’re eligible for counseling services. This means all enrolled students can take advantage of the support LIFT offers.
  • Cost: The fee for counseling services is covered. This makes it very accessible, especially for students who may otherwise find counseling services too expensive.
  • Scheduling: Since individual sessions are often offered on a short-term basis, you can usually expect to have sessions every week, or as needed, until your goals are met. You can discuss with your counselor what the best frequency of meetings would be for your needs.

5. Types of Services Offered:

  • Individual Counseling: As mentioned, one-on-one sessions help explore your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. This is the most common form of counseling.
  • Referrals to Group Counseling: At LIFT, we may offer group counseling, or offer a referral. Group counseling is where you can meet with others who may have similar experiences. This can be helpful in learning that others face similar challenges and building a sense of community.
  • Referrals to Workshops and Resources: LIFT may, at times, provide workshops or resources on topics such as stress management, time management, or building self-esteem.

6. How to Make the Most of Counseling:

  • Be Open and Honest: The more honest and open you are with your counselor, the more you’ll get out of the process. Don’t be afraid to share what’s truly on your mind, even if it feels uncomfortable at first.
  • Set Goals: Work with your counselor to set specific goals for what you’d like to address or change during your sessions. This can help you track your progress.
  • Be Patient: Personal growth takes time. Change might not happen immediately, but the counseling process is about gradual improvement, and it can lead to lasting positive change in your life.

7. Ready to Learn More?

  • If you're interested, we can help you with the next steps—like finding out how to schedule your first session or preparing for your first meeting with a counselor. Submit your Get My LIFT now- you can always change your mind later.

Limitations of Free Services:

LIFT Resources

  • Short-term counseling: LIFT counseling services offer short-term, solution-focused therapy. If you need longer-term care, you might be referred to external providers.

  • High demand: During peak times (like the start of the semester or exam periods), it can sometimes be hard to get an appointment right away due to high demand.

  • Scope of services: Counseling services are often designed to help with typical student challenges (e.g., stress, relationships, academic pressures). If you're facing more severe mental health issues, you may need to seek additional support outside of the LIFT service team. We have lists of options that may suit your needs.

Additional Resources

  • Peer support programs: These are counseling services through trained individuals who have shared experiences, providing a unique form of support and assistance. These programs emphasize shared understanding, empathy, and encouragement, helping individuals navigate personal, social, or emotional challenges. They differ from traditional therapy or case management by utilizing personal experience and stories to inspire hope and facilitate recovery.

  • Student-run organizations: Some campuses have student groups that focus on mental health advocacy, awareness, or provide support to peers.

  • Online resources and apps: Many universities provide access to free or discounted mental health apps or resources, such as Talkspace, Headspace, or 7 Cups, which offer text-based therapy or mindfulness tools.
